A series of large scale public artworks will enliven this year’s Telethon weekend.

The Perth Public Art Foundation approached Artsource to manage the commissioning of three Western Australian artists. Olga Cironis, Paula Hart and Denise Brown were selected to work collaboratively with children experiencing ill health to develop a series of sculptural works.

Foundation Patron Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said that as well as being exhibited at Telethon, some of the creations will be publicly auctioned at the Lexus Ball 2013 on Saturday 19 October with all proceeds going to Telethon.

“One of the sculptures includes a Telethonasauraus named Roary, a 4 meter baby dragon sculpture inspired by the children of Princess Margaret Hospital,” Ms Scaffidi said.

“This initiative is providing children with the chance to express their imagination through art and is a fantastic way to give them a much needed escape."

“These children have experienced so much in their young lives, and their involvement through informing these artworks is an inspiration to the rest of us."

Olga Cironis, Paula Hart and Denise Brown worked closely with groups of young people experiencing a wide range of chronic health conditions to inform the final artworks for auction.

Ms Scaffidi said each of the artists empowered the children fuelling their enthusiasm and providing artistic direction.

“This initiative has given the kids the chance to relax and have some fun, while developing their self-esteem, encouraging social skills and problem solving through an enjoyable creative process.”

“I expect these creations to create a bidding war to raise much needed funds for Telethon’s child health research. The successful bidder of ‘Roary’ will also have the satisfaction of knowing the final sculpture will be permanently installed at PMH so the kids who informed the work can engage with and enjoy their creation on a daily basis.”

The artwork will be on show over the Telethon weekend at the Convention and Exhibition Centre with  each installation  involving activities for children of all ages.

The Perth Public Art Foundation (PPAF) is an independent charitable organisation charged with increasing public art in the city through community partnership.

Perth Public Art Foundation is proud to be a 2013 Telethon beneficiary and supported through partnership from the City of Perth.
