PROJECT NAME:

Busselton Entry upgrade

Design workshop with artists Perdita Phillips and Lance Chadd

Roundabout (detail): matching concrete colours to Six Seasons watercolour design by Lance Chadd

CLIENT:

Busselton Shire Council

ARTISTS:

Lance Chadd, Alex Mickle, Perdita Phillips

BUDGET:

$30,000

TIMEFRAME:

December 2006 – May 2007-06-18

Client brief:

The Client wished to engage early with an artist for the Busselton Entry Upgrade in order that there would be an affect on the whole of planning approach. The artist was to have input in all aspects of the design. The project presented an opportunity to develop a model that is at the forefront of current global practice.

The project was seen in two stages – the first of concept development, the second where consideration of which artist/s should be involved in full design development and implementation.

Artsource approach:

We proposed a collaborative design process that involved professional artists including an Indigenous artist and others with a wealth of experience in creating art for public places. The artists were to work with town engineers, planners and community cultural developers in order that all members of the team could contribute at a professional level.

This project presented an opportunity for a group approach where artists with very different skills and experience could be brought together in the early stages to develop an overall thematic. Artist Perdita Phillips brought environmental sustainability thinking, Lance Chadd brought his knowledge of the region and of Noongar culture, Alex Mickle brought tremendous local knowledge and extensive craftsmanship in the sculptural form to the thinking.

Artsource seeks out projects that offer opportunities to mentor local government officers in commissioning processes, implementation of public art strategies and policy development. We worked closely with the Cultural Development Officer, Lorna Secrett, throughout the process.

About the work:

The team met to share their particular responses. A comprehensive precinct plan was the result of the collaborative design process. The plan identified a colour and materials pallet to inform design of built environment, sites for public art, environmental conservation and opportunities for community collaboration. The plan provided council staff with a blue print for seeking and allocating funding. The design for the roundabout was based on Lance’s significant contribution and revolved around the development of the six Noongar seasons. The work was fabricated by Ready Mix.
