ARTSOURCE
APPROACH:
Artsource was approached by the
Authority to assist with the preparation of an
artwork brief in order to commission an artwork
for the newly re-designed and landscaped CY O’Connor
Landing on Victoria Quay. Landscaping had almost
been completed by the time artsource was approached
and two potential sites had been identified.
In discussion with the Client
it was agreed to move the site closer to the waterfront
and to consider the commissioning of small multiples
to be erected on the bollards at the end of the
car park. It was decided that as the purpose of
the landing was to ferry passengers to Rottnest,
that the brief was geared towards works that were
playful, light-hearted and amusing. Four artists
were short-listed and Judith Forrest’s submission
selected.
Judith’s concept was to
create a mix of cast bronze and cut steel works
each on a fairly tall construction echoing the
cranes used on the quay. She planned to make the
works so that they would be visible as objects
on the skyline from some distance away, but only
understood from a closer viewpoint.
The Fremantle Port Authority provided
additional assistance to the artist in terms of
storage, installation and advice and also arranged
a splendid launch party to celebrate the artworks
on their completion. |
