ARTSOURCE APPROACH:

The City of Mandurah War Memorial was a project with a long gestation period. The City which has grown enormously over the past ten years, began a process of community consultation in 2003. Initially artsource was invited to provide a visual demonstration of war memorials and public art projects from around the world in order that the Advisory Committee gain an understanding of what was possible and what processes could be adopted for the project.

We were then requested to take part in the community consultation phase and prepare and artwork brief for the project. To its credit, the City of Mandurah had taken on board considerable community concern, and the consultation phase was, as a result, quite extensive.

By April, 2004 the consultation phase was complete, a process agreed upon and the brief ready to go to tender. The City advertised the project through the West Australian newspaper and artsource and had a record call for over 80 RFT papers. Finally 17 Expressions of Interest were received and four artist teams were selected to prepare a Design Concept.

The team selected to complete the work was Hames Sharley who completed the work in time for ANZAC Day 2005. In 2006, the Memorial was awarded the RAIA Civic Design Award, with the jury noting that “without hesitation” it “concluded that the project was of a high quality in its civic design contribution, architectural and landscape design aspects and of such considerable community benefit, that an architecture award should be confirmed upon the project”.
