Artsource members Brendan Van Hek and Penny Bovell were selected to enliven FJM Property’s new state of the art office building in Subiaco, with bespoke artworks for the entrance foyer and west facing glass windows on each storey.
Brendan Van Hek designed a series of white neon shapes suspended in the void space of the main entrance. Visible from the street, the work illuminates the foyer of the three-storey office block. The fluid motion in the lines of the work reference energy and propulsion, and the luminosity of the work contrasts strikingly with the dark, linear qualities of the foyer’s recycled wood cladding. Immediately engaging visitors to the building, the artwork is a memorable and distinctive feature that animates and enlivens the entrance space.
Best known for his distinctive neon light works, Brendan works across a variety of media, often in site-specific installations. Varying in character and scale, his works shift from the industrial and minimal to the rich and colourful. Brendan’s work is shaped by personal narratives, engaging with themes of cultural and social politics. His work incorporates materials such as neon, mirror, glass and metal, materials that he manipulates to respond to the specific historical and physical properties of the site.
Penny Bovell painted three landscape works specifically for the location, using earthy colours of blue, green and orange. These beautiful paintings were then photographed at high resolution, printed on film by Discus Digital Printing and applied to the glass windows on the west side of the building. They are now the centre point of the new FJM offices on the third floor. Internally, the works create a calming ambiance for the offices during the day and externally, a colourful reflection at night.
Penny is a highly accomplished artist whose artwork is held by several major public collections as well as numerous private and corporate collections. Her paintings, print work and public art explore the transient nature of sky, air and space. This exploration manifests in ethereal, often abstract images rendered in carefully considered hues and textures. She was selected for this particular commission because of the ethereal and graceful nature of her work.
