Jo Darbyshire's 'Reef Night' (detail, pictured) is one of five large scale installations and close to 1,200 two-dimensional artworks and which are in the process of being installed in Abu Dhabi's Al Bustan Hotel.
Artsource provides Western Australian artists support to contract large scale projects for the public realm, and enable them to be competitive in the international market.
One of the many exciting international projects for Artsource was coordinating the artwork component for a hotel complex in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Artsource worked closely with architects and interior designers from Cox, Howlett and Bailey Woodland Architectural firms to facilitate site specific art works for the hotel’s public areas. This unique commission, managed by Cox Howlett and Bailey Woodland Architects and Artsource, has a total value of nearly $1 million.
Darbyshire's work now holds pride of place in the ball room of the luxury Al Bustan complex, amongst additional site specific public artwork by fellow Western Australian artists and Artsource members Stuart Green, Caspar Fairhall, Tom Muller and Jon Tarry.
Artsource Chief Executive Officer, Gavin Buckley, said "Artsource established the ArtConnect program in 2008, which acts as a conduit to international income earning opportunities for Western Australian artists."
"The ArtConnect program was established after consultation revealed a growing concern about limited income generating opportunities for Western Australian public artists", Buckley explained.
“Artsource began to consider countries where there was an expanding infrastructure, existing relationships with Australian design professionals, where there was no specific call for a localised expression and where contracts were in English," he continued.
“The opportunity to present the work of Australian artists to a new market has not only generated real income for artists, but has raised the profile of numerous members and opened the doors for future projects, exhibitions and exchanges."
The Al Bustan Complex will include a further 1,200 two-dimensional purchased artworks, sourced from across the globe to complement the commissioned works and embellish the state-of-the-art hotel’s interiors.
Artsource continues to seek out international opportunities for its artists, including major public art and cultural programming in the UAE and Singapore. A number of projects are coming to fruition out of strong connections with government, industry, universities and galleries in these countries.
