| Member Services: ADVICE
AND SUPPORT
Artists can be swamped by the need to
respond to a whole range of issues that confront them
in their practice daily. Those issues can be as confusing
as the latest requirements by the ATO and a need to
explain the distinction between professional and hobbyist.
They can be as simple and frightening as a new clause
in a commission contract or questions about protocols
when working with Indigenous communities.
Artsource gives advice on topics including:
- funding applications
- managing your tax
- public art proposals
- working with galleries
- developing exhibition ideas
- professional development
Members can contact Artsource by telephone
for queries or can make an appointment to discuss an
issue in detail with one of our staff.

Artsource maintains awareness and contributes to current
discussions affecting the lives of artists. Issues that
attract our attention and to which we make submissions
include the Inquiry into the Sedition Laws via the Australian
Law Reform Commission, implementation of a Resale Royalty
Right (unsuccessful at this date), various enquiries
into visual education in the secondary and tertiary
sectors; and contributions to the Indigenous Intellectual
Property Toolkit project.
Senior staff of Artsource maintain a
working knowledge of changes in funding arrangements
both in the state and national arena and lobby for improved
effectiveness in direct funding delivery to artists.
Artsource advocates for best practice
in the commissioning and contracting processes for artists.
We do this through direct contact and discussion with
commissioning clients including developers, architects,
Local Government and private individuals. Ongoing contact
with the Department of Culture and the Arts and the
Department for Housing and Works in WA is maintained
regularly in order to continue and improve our understanding
of best practice and provide an information link to
those government departments regarding artists’
needs.
Both Perth and Fremantle Artsource offices can assist
artists with:

Since the commencement of the Regional and Indigenous
Artist Development Project, artsource has increased its
capacity to service regional and Indigenous artists
in the Midwest, Goldfields and Great Southern regions.
We endeavour to ensure that artists are considered equally
for employment and professional development possibilities.
We do this via regional workshops, one to one meetings
and networking.

Artsource co-ordinates an artLease service which offers clients the opportunity to lease artworks for their premises. Artworks enrich a working environment by making premises more attractive and stimulating but they also can operate to reflect a company’s philosophy and communicate their unique identity to both staff and clients.
Artsource employs Art Consultants to provide advice to clients on building a corporate collection through both the leasing and purchasing of artworks. We present works that we feel best suit a company and it’s premises and assist them to select works, then we co-ordinate the lease or purchase of works as well as installation.
Artsource works to compliment the services provided by ArtBank, the Federal Government initiative of a similar nature, by offering works from an exclusively Western Australian pool of artists.
