Skills development workshops continued in the Mid West with Janis Nedela, Ric Spencer and Helen Clarke conducting a 3 hour workshop with 30 artists (4 Indigenous) on an Introduction to Gallery Relationships. Artists questioned three members of the Art Industry (a gallery director, an arts writer, and an arts lecturer) on the type of information needed to work with Art Galleries effectively in the promotion of their artworks.

‘BASIC DOCUMENTATION ’ workshop in the mid west with Ionas Kaltenbach and Kathryn Moroz

In a time of changing technology it is challenging for artists to keep up and continue with the necessary task of documenting their work. On 17th of June Ionas Kaltenbach, talented photographer and sculpture, assisted artists with the use or a digital camera, how to photograph in different lighting conditions, how to photograph an artwork once it is framed behind glass and the use of a colour card to assist with correct colour representation when artwork goes to print. Kathryn Moroz, artist, designer and manager of Marra, then took over and guided participants through the process of down loading images from camera to laptop. She also covered sizing images for email and burning to disc.

‘MAKE TIME TO TALK’ Skills development workshop in the gascoyne with nalda searles

Who: Make time to talk skills development workshop
Where: Carnarvon
When: 2 – 7th June 2008
Partners: Relationships Australia through Healthways, Nalda Searles and Sarah Toohey DCA

Skills development workshops continued in the Gascoyne with Nalda Searles and Sarah Trant delivering workshops to 9 Indigenous and 6 Non-Indigenous artists from Carnarvon and Shark Bay. The artists experimented with natural fibres, weaving design, patterns, and learnt how to use different plants for best results.  Artists also learned how to cultivate local banana tree fibre to make a sustainable source or materials.  This workshop ended in a mini-market – where artists displayed their artworks to the local public

‘MAKE TIME TO TALK’ Skills development workshop in the Kimberley with Sarah Toohey

Who: Make time to talk skills development workshop
Where: Derby
When: 13 – 18th April 2008
Partners: Relationships Australia through Healthways and Mowanjum Arts Centre

Skills development workshops were delivered over 5 days to a mixed group of 25 Indigenous artists and many Mowanjum community members. Sarah Toohey delivered colour mixing, working with different mediums (textiles and doll-making), exploring design techniques and current art practices. An interesting side note to this workshop is that it had many school holiday kids drifting in and out of the workshops, and these community members really enjoyed mixing with the artists and Sarah Toohey.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

‘MAKE TIME TO TALK’ Skills development workshop in the Greater Southern with Ben Mitchell

When: 8/9/10th April 2008
Partners: Relationships Australia through Healthways and Mungart Boodja Arts Centre

5 Indigenous artists and 2 Non-indigenous staff member took part in canvas stretching and frame making basics delivered at Mungart Boodja, to assist artists in developing their own techniques for managing this on the gallery premises. The artists explored different types of frame stretching, looked at what was locally available, learned how to make these frames using local products, learned how to stretch short canvas, re-stretch badly stretched canvas and then got to put these skills into to practice.

‘MAKE TIME TO TALK’ Skills development workshop in the Mid West with Lesley Munro

Who: Make time to talk skills development workshop
Where: Horrocks, Geraldton and Mullewa
When: 17th – 20th March 2008
Partners: Relationships Australia through Healthway

Skills development workshops continued in the Mid West with Lesley Munro delivering workshops to 27 Indigenous and 15 Non-Indigenous artists from Kalbarri, Horrocks, Northampton, Geraldton, Yalgoo, Mullewa and Morawa. The artists experimented with colour mixing and learnt how to use different paint mediums not only to apply paint to canvas but also create interesting visual effects.
