regional & indigenous: Artist Mob Workshops + Meetings

Since the program began Artsource has run over 30 workshops and worked with over 250 artists. The workshops are open to all artists, emerging, professional and students.

Wherever we go, we are asked not would we be coming back but how soon. There is a clear and strong desire for regional artists to learn more and be exposed to more.

Recently we have had very strong requests for help with use of materials, developing ideas, translating ideas, colour theory, curatorial assistance and pricing.

Artist Mob Workshops provide support and assistance in

• CV and Portfolio compilation
• Documenting your work
• Marketing and Publicity
• Copyright and Moral rights
• Public art
• Your rights as an artist
• Establishing relationships with a gallery
• Funding

Valuing Pilbara Indigenous Art workshop with Leah Tarlo

Who: Local Indigenous and Non-indigenous artists
Where: Tom Price
When: 23rd – 27th Feb 2009
Partners: Principal partner is Rio Tinto Iron Ore. Community partners are Gumala Aboriginal Corporation, PACT, and the Tom Price Cultural Centre

1

Leah Tarlo introduced found objects and small sculpture works to 5 Indigenous artists and 15 Non-indigenous artists in Tom Price, through a series of day and night workshops – working largely with Tom Price’s large art community. It is envisaged that there will be more connection with Indigenous artists in their communities, although we especially look forward to working with Wayne Stephens and Marlon Cooke in developing further opportunities for their artworks.

Valuing Pilbara Indigenous Art workshop with Dale Tilbrook

Who: Local Indigenous artists
Where: Roebourne – Yinjaa Barni Arts Centre
When: 30th Mar – 3rd Apr 2009
Partners: Principal partner is Rio Tinto Iron Ore. Community partners are Yinjaa Barni Arts Centre, and The Shire of Roebourne

1

Dale Tilbrook runs her own business and Gallery in the Swan Valley of Perth that relies heavily on the Indigenous tourism market. Dale’s experiences have allowed her to develop techniques for ‘value-adding’ and finding that subtle ‘point of difference’ to a product that best increases your chances of developing sustainable sales – and better engages those customers you wish to attract. Dale assisted Yinjaa Barni Art Centre, and engaged up to ten artists in these techniques – discussing other ways to attract tourists with a variety of artworks that might help build on Yinjaa Barni Art Centre’s sales.
