Situated approximately 30 minutes down stream from Perth, Fremantle looms large in Western Australia as a vibrant cultural hub bustling with unique charm and character.
The port city is home to a diverse range of cultural organisations and institutions including galleries, museums, live music and performance venues, as well as an iconic café strip.
Fremantle’s population of about 25,000 is composed of an eclectic mix of hippies, yuppies, artists, corporate magnates, musicians, designers and politicians. With its strong southern European flavour, Fremantle has a fantastic array of restaurants, entertainment, festivals, and maritime activities. Although now largely gentrified it retains a strong sense of community and heritage with a ready network of artists and arts activity for visiting artists.
Fremantle residencies are available to international, interstate, and, local artists and arts administrators from all mediums at a cost of $220 per week for WA artists and $350 for others.
Both residency opportunities are located in heritage listed buildings evocative of Fremantle’s rich maritime past. Residency periods begin at a minimum of two weeks with a maximum stay of three months (negotiable).
International and interstate artists are welcome to extend their stay in Western Australia and embark on an additional country WA residency. Country residencies offer free accommodation and studio space. Some communities have an exhibition space available and will offer you the option of holding an exhibition either during or after the residency.
Travel and living expenses are to be met by the artist.
For more details see the West Australian residencies page.
