RESIDENCies - WEST AUSTRALIAN

Esperance

Host
The Cannery Arts Centre
Norseman Road, Esperance

About Esperance
Esperance is an isolated community located on the south east coast of Western Australia some 800kms from Perth. Esperance is a popular tourist and holiday destination renowned for its white sandy beaches and pristine clear turquoise blue waters. The region has very close connections to the Goldfields region and many Kalgoorlie residents move to Esperance to be nearer the coast or to retire. Population is around 14 thousand and rapidly increasing with the construction and soon to start operation of BHP Billitons’ Nickel mine an hour’s drive north-west from the Esperance townsite. The Port of Esperance will play a major role in the export of Nickel from the mine site. At present the port exports large amounts of Iron-ore which is railed into Esperance. The region is known for its large farming properties cropping, sheep and cattle stations.

About the Cannery Arts Centre
The Cannery Arts Centre is situated on a large block surrounded by gardens and adjacent to the beach. It has a number of buildings used for various artforms. It has a large main gallery space with adjoining office, art room, kitchen, storeroom, toilets and meeting room. Other buildings on the grounds are a Print room, Ceramic room, and Photography dark room, a shop that sells local artwork, Music room and current Youth Arts Centre building with extra space for an artist studio. We have a small self-contained flat attached to the main gallery. The Arts Centre is managed by a management committee of volunteers and is funded primarily by Country Arts WA and the Esperance Shire Council. We have currently 180 members, and employ a full time Arts Centre manager. The centre has many user groups that meet on a regular basis i.e. Pottery Club, Patch workers Club, Photography Club, Art Society, Spinners and Weavers Club to name a few.

Hosts expectations of the artist during the residency
Running workshops: The Arts Centre has so far this year offered two courses in painting and drawing. Both have been 6 weeks courses and have had 30 participants in total. With the closure of Curtin Universities Visual Arts unit a big gap has been left in the Esperance region and the Cannery Arts Centre is trying to keep similar art programs offered to the community. Our biggest difficulty is being able to source suitably qualified tutors. Participants who attended the courses already held have requested the opportunity to be able to further develop and extend the drawing and painting skills they were taught in those classes. Therefore, the focus of the residency would in part be on conducting a series of painting and drawing workshops for the Esperance community. All workshops would be offered to the outlying communities. The artist would receive payment for running the workshops. All details are negotiable with the artist.

Exhibition: There would also be a possibility of holding an exhibition in conjunction with the residency as we have a visual arts space in a small gallery adjacent to the main gallery.

Accommodation
Accommodation is provided at the Cannery site in a small self contained unit. It includes bedroom, small living area, kitchen, bathroom, but no laundry. A small workshop studio space is available to the artist along with a small gallery space to exhibit if desired.

Expenses to be paid by the artist
Accommodation is free of charge but all other costs inclusive of travel expenses are to be incurred by the artist.

Grants or living allowance paid to artist
None available at this stage.

Duration of residency
Negotiable, but a guide would be 2 to 6 weeks.

Artform preferred
Ideally we would like a painter or drawer. However we are open to consider any artform.

Can artist bring a partner / children / animals?
The artist can bring a partner but it must be stressed that the accommodation provided is a small self-contained flat (1 bedroom with adjoining kitchen and small bathroom). Children and animals would not but suitable but may be negotiable with the management committee in special circumstances.

Is the residency suitable for groups of artists or students?
