About Greenough
Located 24 km south of Geraldton and 400 km north of Perth (via the Brand Highway), Greenough is one of the most interesting historical towns in Australia. Claimed by some to be the country's best preserved nineteenth century town, this small settlement has enough buildings of interest to keep the enthusiast busy for at least a day.
Today the heart of Greenough - a collection of eleven buildings including the gaol, courthouse, police station, churches, and school - is administered by the National Trust and open from 9.00 am - 4.45 pm daily
Resident artists will have the use of the Teachers quarters and surrounding buildings by negotiation. The surrounding grounds of the Central Greenough settlement can also be utilized.
Host expectations of artist during the residency
As this is a public program resident artist will be required to create and deliver some form of community engagement activity. This may be in the form of artist talks, community workshops, master classes for local artist, exhibition or other activity. Community activity may take place on site or at another local venue that is appropriate and will be negotiated prior to the commencement of the residency.
Accommodation
The Teachers Quarters is in the Courthouse building located at Central Greenough Historic Settlement. The Courthouse building began construction in 1870. Other sections within the Courthouse building include: Court Room, Retiring Room, Kitchen, The Cells, The Exercise Yard, The Post Office and the Police Sergeants Quarters.
The Teachers Quarters in Central Greenough have undergone a major interior refit during 2006/2007. All furniture and fixtures are brand new, with freshly painted walls, new linen and homewares. The Quarters is fully self contained with fully equipped kitchen, laundry, bedroom, lounge room and bathroom. As Central Greenough is located in a rural area there is no television or landline phone in the Quarters. Mobile phone range is also limited in this area. Access to a phone is available between 9am – 5pm in the Central Greenough Visitors Centre which is on site. There is no public transport, except to arrange with local schools to utilise their bus route. The location exudes peacefulness and historical richness.
