| Studios: settlers cottage studios
Settlers Cottage is a heritage listed property situated in the middle of a couple of hectares of bushland in Churchlands. The property includes the Cottage of four rooms, separate toilets & kitchen building, a rotunda and all the grounds.
Artsource leased the property from the National Trust in October 2006 and since then the rooms have been sub-let to artists to use as studios. The building is over 100 years old, is fragile and requires some care, mostly in relation to the protection of the floors, walls & ceilings. Protective coverings and hanging rails have been installed to assist in this regard.
These studios are not subsidised. Artsource has taken on a commercial lease with the National Trust and given the same lease conditions to the artists as Artsource holds - 2 years plus an option for a further 3 years. However, artists can leave the studios by giving 2 months notice, and Artsource will offer the space to another artist. The rooms range from approx 13 sqm - 16 sqm and rent are $44 per week. Rents are reviewed annually and increases kept to a minimum.
In October 2007, Artsource and the National Trust won a West Australian Business and the Arts Partnership Award in the Arts Development category for our partnership.
