“Don’t leave,” was the cry heard throughout the streets as Snapcat collaborators Renae Coles and Anna Dunnill campaigned for people to stay in Perth.

“Don’t leave,” was the cry heard throughout the streets as Snapcat collaborators Renae Coles and Anna Dunnill campaigned for people to stay in Perth.

Don’t Leave was the first in a series of performances - Tiny Parades (running until 27 June) during which two lone paraders will occupy the streets of Perth, passionately supporting personal, small-scale cause as part of the Perth Public Art Foundation’s perthFLUX.

A public spectacle, a noisy protest, a mournful march, a joyous celebration – let us bring your parade to life

Tiny Parades

Snapcat says: “These performances will be both ridiculous and earnest, asserting that a collective of passionate individuals can change the world for the better. Activating ideas around spectacle, freedom of speech and community, we aim to make personal passions, victories, laments and vexations very public.”

The artists have presented “Go Ahead, Rain On Our Parade” and “Technostalgia“. The project is building momentum as onlookers photograph and film the performances and post them to social media, using the tag #tinyparades.

Snapcat is a collaboration between Renae Coles and Anna Dunnill working across media by combining participatory performance and video with painting and sculpture, and online social media platforms.

Their parades combine spectacle, colour and a do-it-yourself aestehtic to create an atmosphere that is both absurd and sincere. As a form of socially engaged practice, the artists use performance to merge the learning of new skills and communication methods with community and social rituals, crossing the boundaries of what are considered process and artwork.

The Perth Public Art Foundation is a not for profit cultural charity that develops philanthropic partnership to realise public art projects in the City of Perth. Executive Director of PPAF Nathan Giles said “The Foundation has been working with Artsource in the development of perthFLUX, a curatorial program of urban art interventions that responds to our City’s transformation. As part of perthFLUX, a series of public art interventions will be commissioned over the coming two year period. The PPAF is delighted to be launching perthFLUX with Snapcat and honoured to be providing opportunity for emerging West Australian artists to develop their practice.”
