West Leederville School of Early Learning, Artsource Artist ResidencyArtist in Residence at School of Early Learning, West Leederville

1 August 2016

The School of Early Learning engaged Artsource to develop an Artist in Residence program, with the initial pilot residency taking place at their West Leederville school for six weeks.

The objectives for these in-school residencies enhanced the arts activities currently taking place to further enrich the knowledge, confidence and enthusiasm of students. Children participated in high-quality educational and artistic activities that offer dynamic learning experiences.

Artist, Olga Cironis, worked with the children to create sculptural works using sticks, wool, fabric and longer strips of materials for wrapping. These stick sculptures developed into a large, colourful hanging installation. The artwork created subtle moving shadows around the studio and referenced trees and nature.

Art is a powerful way of communicating messages about values and emotions. Children have a high visual literacy and can appreciate and enjoy a wide-range of challenging, conceptual and interesting art. When artists make work which is appropriate to children of all ages it can be imaginative, thoughtful and humanising.

Olga has exhibited nationally and internationally for over 26 years and delivered workshops and residencies in metropolitan and remote regional areas. Her work is represented in major art collections, including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Princess Margaret Hospital and Bankwest.
