Eva Fernandez completed a Master of Arts (Creative Arts) at Edith Cowan University, Western Australia, in 2002. She has been a practicing artist for over two decades, currently working in photography, digital based media and installation, in addition to academic and curatorial work.
Eva's art practice seeks to contextualise her existence in the space she inhabits, including exploration of her physical environment, as well as cultural and gender identity. In her more recent bodies of work, she examines the deconstruction and reconstruction of symbolically laden objects to subtly critique the time in which they were created.
Eva is developing an artist book based on a collection of narratives, anecdotes and new artworks that connect her and her artwork to her family history during the Spanish Civil War.

I am currently conducting extensive research for the development of a new publication, The Frugal Repast, which is a collection of narratives, anecdotes and new artworks focusing on a collection of recipes from my family history from the Spanish Civil War era. Drawing from these narratives, I am creating a new body of photographic works that are a contemporary interpretation of this collection of information. My goal is to create a publication of this work.
Since the commencement date of the Ignite grant on 1 September, I have been working on the project, creating new photographic works as well as developing the manuscript for the publication. I have also commenced laying out the contents to create a rough draft of the publication.
The photographic images that I have been creating are contemporary interpretation of the narratives, passed down from my family history and illuminated through contemporary photographic images, which draw aesthetically from the rich culture of Spanish still life painting since the end of the 16th century.
I have also continued to develop the manuscript for the publication researching my family history and developing the relevant material into the text. At this stage the text is approximately 4000 words.
I have also been researching self-publication and design and have commenced laying out the content of my publication in BookWright. This is software provided by Blurb, which is a complete publishing platform that allows you to design, publish, print and promote your own publications. This is also very versatile software as it allows your publication to take form of an e-book, enabling greater distribution at lower expense.
This process has been very useful in getting a better idea of the aesthetic and layout of the publication as well as size. It has also made apparent which areas need further research and where the strengths and weaknesses are in order to make amendments.
