Kirsten Biven

Biography

I was born and grew up on a family farm in Denmark (Europe). After completing high school and gaining some work experience, I travelled to Canada as a rural exchange student and arrived in Australia in the mid seventies. Here, together with my partner, my travels took me to an isolated new land farm east of Esperance. My formal art education began in the mid eighties. It was a slow and long process, partly due to the weekly 210km round trip to Esperance TAFE, but also due to my commitment in raising a family and developing the farm. It was not until after we moved to Perth in 2010 that I finally finished my arts degree at Curtin University in 2011. I can see evidence of my cultural Danish heritage in my art practice but the essence of my art making relates to my connection with the natural environment, open spaces, and a sense of isolation.

Artist Statement

I'm foremost a painter who explores the physicality of paint and its aesthetic potential, but I also draw and use installations in my practice. A re-occurring theme in my work is the delicate inter-relationship that exists in a harsh enduring landscape between the elements and its people. Seeing, finding and re-expressing is all part of my art practice.
