Artist Statement

The sculpture ‘La cuna (The Cradle)’ by Leonora Carrington and Jose Horna serves as a point of departure for this project. The history of this object as a vessel built for a childs journey into dreamland resonates with my interest in working with children at PMH.

Elizabeth Marruffo grew up in a small border town in Sonora, Mexico. She emigrated to England at 7 years old, and then later to Australia. Elizabeth works predominantly in the medium of painting, but includes small sculptures in her immersive installations. Elizabeth completed post-graduate studies in 2012 at Edith Cowan University where she graduated with first class honours. She has had solo shows at Turner Galleries in Perth and Friends of Leon Gallery in Sydney.
Recently she has won the Sir Charles Gairdner hospital award and the City of Wanneroo works on paper award. In 2015 she received a highly commended award for her paintings at both the Busselton Art Award and the City of Bayswater art award. She has been a finalist twice in the Portia Geach Memorial award for portraiture. Her work is represented in the collections of Edith Cowan University, St John of God hospital, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, the City of Wanneroo and the Education department of WA.
Elizabeth is also the co-founder of the Milktooth Arts Project Space in Bayswater where she runs children’s art classes and some classes for adults.
