All Saints’ College commissioned highly respected Western Australian artist, Simon Gilby, to create a sculpture to coincide with the College’s 30th anniversary.

The artwork titled ‘Together We Are’ was unveiled in the College’s Centre for Performing Arts at a function emceed by Artsource Chief Executive, Gavin Buckley, on Wednesday 17 April 2013.

The adolescent male and female forms of the work are presented on stands, with branches and leaves emerging from the figures.

“I want the figures to represent our individual and equal humanity with the branches symbolising our continual growth as people,” artist Simon Gilby said.

Importantly, Simon wanted the project to be a collaborative effort between himself and the students.  All junior and senior school students were given the opportunity to scribe an image onto a steel plate which somehow represented them as individuals. After being etched and printed, these metal plates were welded together to make up the skin of the two figures.

“While I usually make my works alone and with the subject of my own choosing, evolving in the process, this time the subject is the 'school' and the two figures act as 'time capsules' made up of the individual students,” Simon said.

“This is an exciting project for me and I am grateful for the support of All Saints’ College staff and students to accommodate the scope of this whole-school project.”

The 1,100 or so prints were framed and hang alongside the two sculptures. Together, they provide a record of All Saints’ students in the College’s milestone 30th anniversary year.

Gavin Buckley, Artsource Chief Executive, commented, "The new Performing Arts Centre at All Saints' College is truly impressive. What a wonderful resource for the students and, it goes without saying, that Simon's work looks beautiful in the space. I have no doubt that students will have found working with Simon on the collaborative part of the project to be both an enjoyable and inspiring experience."
