(e)merging celebrates artists at a point in their practice where new avenues are being explored, negotiated, and fulfilled. In efforts to widen support for nascent artistic practice in Perth, Room01 has teamed up with Artsource to organise a professional development and exhibition program offered to early career artists.

We want to contribute to, and help shape the ecologies of artistic and curatorial practice in Western Australia. We welcome collaboration with arts organisations, institutions and professionals, and this program is offered to create a dialogue around the means of support available to early career artists in Western Australia.

The organisers hope that this program will explore and support the breadth and depth of contemporary concerns in emerging artistic practices.

ABOUT US

Room01 Collective is a newly formed arts organisation based in Perth WA established in 2019. Its current members are Aimee Dodds and Elizabeth Smith, recent graduates and arts workers whose aim is to facilitate spaces for emerging artists to exhibit on a regular basis. When formed in 2019, Room01 Collective included members Annie Huang, Stirling Kain, Molly Werner, Jaimi Wright, Claudia Minutillo and Grace Hewitt.

Our inaugural exhibition titled (cross)hatched was held in 2019 as a survey of graduate artists who completed their final studio unit in 2018. The participating graduate artists were invited from the institutions in Perth that offered a visual arts qualification; the University of Western Australia, Edith Cowan University, Curtin University and North Metropolitan TAFE. These artists were making their marks at a junction in their careers - the point where the trajectories of their experiences within educational institutions encounter external experiences, their lines intersecting. Playing off of the tradition of the Hatched National Graduate Show at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, (cross)hatched did not ‘curate’ submissions rather, it created space in the gallery for any artwork that is offered by its maker.  Our intention was to simultaneously celebrate and critique Hatched. Our hope was that (cross)hatched engendered healthy debate over our art institutions, what role they play on a local and national scale, and what opportunities they successfully provide (or don’t) for emerging artists.
