Star Fall | Alister Yiap (2015)

Alister Yiap’s installation, Star Fall, was selected for Brookfield Place as part of Brookfield’s Annual Christmas Art Project. The temporary installation comprises five individual geometric stars suspended from a tree in an open courtyard between the main tower lobby and heritage buildings.

Dangling from stainless steel cords, each timber-fabricated pendant is coated with individual pieces of silver acrylic mirror. The effect is mesmerising; each multi-faceted star sways slightly in the breeze, twinkling as it reflects the afternoon sunlight onto the adjacent pedestrian walkway.

While the stars draw inspiration from Christmas tree ornaments, they have a distinctly jewellery-like feel in their delicate intricacy and luminosity, lending an elegant seasonal touch to Brookfield place.
This aesthetic arises from Perth-based Yiap’s background in jewellery design and creating wearable art. A current lecturer in the Advanced Diploma of Jewellery Design programme at Central Institute of Technology, Yiap has an established presence in both the fine jewellery and contemporary fashion spaces. His pieces have graced the runways of the Perth Fashion Festival, the Mercedes-Benz WA Fashion Awards and Styleaid.
Yiap’s signature geometric designs have translated sublimely into large-scale artworks since expanding his practice to include public art in 2012. His growing repertoire of public projects and art commissions notably include the 2014 City of Perth Key and the 140Gems seating installation at CBUS’ 140 William Street.

Yiap has also been the recipient of numerous awards across the art and design industry, including the prestigious WA Fashion award for Fine Details. His work has been exhibited both in Australia and internationally, including at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the LaSalle College of the Arts Gallery in Singapore, Percolator Gallery in Queensland, and recently at Gaffa and Depot II Gallery in New South Wales.

Star Fall will be installed at 125 St George’s Terrace until 3 January 2016.

Star Fall was commissioned by Artsource on behalf of Brookfield Commercial Operations, as part of Arts Brookfield; a commitment to presenting exciting, world-class cultural experiences to thousands of people for free each year. These projects are run in both indoor and outdoor public spaces at Brookfield’s premier buildings in Denver, New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Toronto, Perth and Sydney. From concerts, theatre and dance to film screenings and art exhibitions, Arts Brookfield brings public spaces to life through art.
