Biography

Laura holds an M.F.A in Design from VCU, USA, a Diploma of Fine Art from Central TAFE and an Advanced Diploma of Music Education from MIA in W. Australia, and a B.A. in Music/English. She has had a career as a musician, another as an e-business art director, all the while as a practicing visual artist. She has exhibited and been collected internationally, and has taught art from the university to early childhood levels. Recent projects include an exhibition and AIR in NYC, USA comprised of narrative video paintings and illuminated sculptures, a large scale renewable energy public art commission for the CIty of Cockburn, and a sellout exhibition of paintings based on an international book project with a Melbourne publisher. Although her main medium is painting, Laura chooses a relevant diversity of mediums to express each conceptual body of work with which she engages.

Artist Statement

Tirelessly inquisitive, Mitchell uses her primary medium, paint, to fuse materials and genre with the concept of each series. True to her American roots, much of her work is informed by the Popart tradition and is rich with typography. Not just a painter, she fuses each concept with appropriate complementary mediums such as sculpture and digital media/video.
