WHAT IF GENDER ISN'T WHO WE ARE BUT WHAT WE PERFORM?
Perth artist Sarah McBride presents Performance of Gender, a new solo exhibition at Old Customs House, Fremantle.
The exhibition explores gender as something performed rather than fixed, using the experiences and representation of cross-dressers as its central focus. Drawing on Judith Butler’s idea that gender is produced through repeated acts and social expectations, the exhibition considers how clothing, appearance and behaviour shape the ways gender is recognised and understood.
“What interests me is the space between who we believe we are and how we are expected to appear. Clothing can completely change the way we experience our bodies and the way others respond to us. For someone who cross-dresses, that experience can be both liberating and incredibly vulnerable.” — Sarah McBride
