Jody Loaring

Biography

Jody Loaring was born & raised in Margaret River WA, drawing inspiration from its biodiverse environment to graduate from Edith Cowan University in 1992 with a BA Arts in Textiles & Photography, documenting & making sculptural works that explored time & place. Now based in Broome, she continues to explore the ongoing theme of origins, landscape, memory & the historic cultural impacts of colonisation within the Australian landscape. Jody lectures in Visual Art at Broome NRTAFE. Her work is held in public & private collections. She was one of the selected artist for the Shinju Matsuri Golden Jubilee Art Installation Project HOME, aimed to develop a public art installation work to celebrate Shinju Matsuri’s Golden Jubilee year.

Artist Statement

My practice communicates an ongoing investigation into family narratives of arrival into the violent & distant landscape of WA in the 1830’s. It explores impacts of inherent power inequities, transferred at the time of settlement upon the accepted beliefs & societal norms within Australia towards alcohol abuse, trauma, family violence & inequality for women.
