Art, borders and community

Join us for lively talks and relaxed peer discussion with 5.30pm Friday 24 July 2020, Old Customs House, 8 Phillimore Street, Fremantle.

Six speakers will talk for six minutes each on topics including borders and community; set amongst and inspired by the Rawa Titungarala exhibition.

Gallery doors and bar open at 5.30pm. Talks start at 6pm.

For those wishing to stay on, soup is served at 7pm for some informal dining and peer discussion set among the Rawa Titungarala exhibition. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available. Please register as places are limited.

Ron Bradfield Jnr is a saltwater man from Bardi Country, north of Broome but grew up in Geraldton, Western Australia! He now calls Whadjuk Boodjar (Perth) his home.

As the Chief Yarning Officer of Yarns R Us, Ron facilitates cultural conversations across all levels of our communities, helping Australians to revisit their own personal stories and then, challenging them to reassess the ways in which they are connected, to the place they call home. Ron is also a storyteller and maker; he has worked in and around the arts across remote, regional and metropolitan Western Australia for 15 years - often supporting the development of artists - as they explore the ways in which they can grow and share their creative practices here in Western Australia.

Kieran Wong is a co-founder and Principal at TheFulcrum.Agency, a creative consultancy that leverages community and social outcomes through evidenced-based design strategy, advocacy and research.

Kieran’s portfolio includes urban design and architectural projects that have been awarded by the Australian Institute of Architects across commercial, public, urban design, interiors, education and residential categories, as well as winning the Australian Award for Urban Design and an International Award for Public Participation. His writing has been published widely on topics covering urban renewal, Indigenous housing and new models of design practice and procurement.

Kieran is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Monash University; Industry Partner for the University of Sydney’s Health Habitat Incubator; Project Advisor for University Queensland’s Pilot Research project into the Northern Territory’s Room to Breathe Housing Program; and State Advisor: Architecture on the New Museum Project in Perth’s Cultural Centre. He is currently leading a series of projects with Indigenous communities on the Groote Archipelago, NT and in Minjerribah, QLD that seek to improve quality of life through better housing and community infrastructure.

Madeleine van der List is the curator of Rawa Titungarala, on return from an 18 month appointment as Art Centre Manager for Tjarlirli Art in Tjukurla and Docker River communities on the border of Western Australia and Northern Territory.

During her appointment with Tjarlirli she began discussions with International Art Space as a host community for Spaced 4: ‘Rural Utopias’ program. Madeleine has always been oriented to developmental opportunities for artists and art workers to diversify their engagement in the art centre.

Madeleine has been a visual art educator across secondary and primary schools across Perth and Victoria informing her approach to the effective delivery of course content exploring the different frameworks schools have used. Madeleine’s diverse background in Art, Education and Marketing informs her development of creative projects looking at different ways artists can engage with their community.

GUILTY screening: World Day Against The Death Penalty

In support of organisations working towards global abolition, on World Day Against the Death Penalty 10 October 2018 - GUILTY will hold a national screenings event at which the filmmakers and prominent human rights advocates speak to the issue of capital punishment.

The final 72-hours in the life of Myuran Sukumaran, the Bali-9 convicted criminal who became an accomplished artist on death row under the tutorship of artist Ben Quilty. Clinical preparations for capital punishment contrast with Myuran’s indomitable spirit as he creates some of his most powerful artworks before his execution by an Indonesian firing squad on Nusa Kambangan Island, 29 April 2015.

Home Town: art ambition on an international stage

The annual Artsource and UWA Cultural Precinct Symposium, HOME TOWN: Artist and community ambition on an international stage, explored the relationship between artists and communities relating to ambitious site specific artworks. It considered existing international and local projects; their history, impact and significance for local communities.

The discussion looked at artist driven projects and the paradox of permanence for public interventions as the contexts around them shift. How can artists respond to the unintended consequences of town planning, movement of people, community regeneration? How can work be translated, understood or misunderstood in different contexts?

The day also covered the idea of a local/global nexus and how extraordinary art experiences can be grown out of engagement with and be driven by communities. How can artists and communities strike a balance between the politics of spectatorship and the social, political and economic values around public space?

Artsource Talks: NAIDOC - The business of collaborating across cultures

Artsource in association with the Art Gallery Of Western Australia, contemporary Indigenous artists, Deborah Bonar and Sandra Hill talked about their practice with a focus on collaboration. Deborah Bonar and Sandra Hill discussed their experience navigating business collaborations with artists and fabricators cross-culturally in the complicated environment of public art.

Perth based artist, Deborah Bonar, has created a unique personal style, creating vibrant works with immense visual power and complexity. Her paintings are bold kaleidoscopes of vigorous lines and dots. Influenced by her Gija and Yamatji heritage, her artwork demonstrates the importance of place in forming cultural identity and in capturing and fascinating our imagination.

Nyoongar artist, Sandra Hill, was born in South Perth in 1951. Hill works across various media, including painting, printing, mixed-media collage, sculpture, installation and public art. Having these skills has meant that Hill has been in constant demand as an arts worker and she has worked for a number of institutions including the Longmore Remand Centre, Curtin University of Technology, Fish Mungah Aboriginal Cultural Arts Festival, Geraldton Regional Community Education, Artsource, Edith Cowan University and Fremantle Prison, undertaking roles such as workshop presenter, lecturer, teacher and researcher.

Get Illuminated

"Get Illuminated" saw Light Application open their busy factory for a one night only event. The guided tours and technical demonstrations of their services and equipment capabilities were designed to give an insight into their capabilities and inspire artists to expand their arts practice.

Experienced public artists, Rick Vermey and Dawn Gamblen, shared their workflow and offered insights into incorporating light into the fabrication of artworks. The night finished with a Q&A session with the artists and specialists from Light Applications.

This was an exclusive event for Artsource artist members.

Artsource Talks: Artists on Residencies

Artsource Talks: Artists on Residencies, hosted by Nyisztor Studios, offered reflections from recent Artsource Atelier Mondial Basel and Artspace Sydney residency recipients. Jennifer Cochrane (Basel 2016), Theo Koning (Basel 2015), Paul Caporn (Basel 2014) and Teelah George (Sydney 2015). They spoke about their time on residency, shared their insights on what it means to have a residency and how it has influenced their practice and further opportunities.

Artist Talks: Emerged

In partnership with the City of South Perth and the EVOLVE. development programme, this Artsource Talks explored what ‘emerging’ looked like from the 1980’s to the 2010’s. Four artists from four different decades, Claire Bushby, Jurek Wybraniec, Dr Perdita Phillips and Antony Muia shared their experience of being an emerging artist and discussed the challenges of emerging today and whether it was different to those who emerged many years earlier.

Emerged is the opportunity to gain some insight into the evolution of change as well as the consistency that has remained in emerging visual art over the years.

The City of South Perth hosts a variety of low cost workshops and professional development sessions alongside the Emerging Artist Award. The programme is open to both Award entrants in the early stages of their artistic careers and creatives who are keen to develop their skills. Fabricating in Foam

Wintech opened their factory for a unique one day only event, presenting tours and technical demonstrations of the possibilities their foam contour cutting machines, robotics and 3D modeling capabilities hold for artists.

Sharing their knowledge and experience of fabricating in foam was WA artists Stelarc and Erin Coates, alongside the Wintech engineers.

Artist Talks: Machines and Makers

In partnership with the Mundaring Art Centre, Artsource is presenting talks from artists, all of who will have responded “to the political, social and economic impacts of the invention and use of the domestic sewing machine from the (1850’s – 1980’s) as well as selected historic sewing machines form the Collection of Charles Lithgow.”

Join artists Coral Lowry, Angela McHarrie, Tee Ken Ng and Geoffrey Drake-Brockman to hear about their practice and involvement in the Machines and Makers project as well as a Q&A with curator, Jude van der Merwe.

Artist Talks: TYPECAST

In partnership with AGWA, Artsource is inviting four contemporary Indigenous artists from four different decades, to share their experiences in challenging the status quo of the Aboriginal Art Market boom. How did this market impact on these artists and how did they maintain a contemporary arts practice here in Western Australia?

Artists Robert Hitchcock, Sharyn Egan, Norma McDonald and Peter Farmer participated in this open discussion on navigating the economic infuences on contemporary arts practice as an Indigenous artist.

The Challenges for 'Emerging' Curators

An ‘emerging curator’ confronts many situations. Join local curators Gemma Weston, Dr Laetitia Wilson, Eve Chaloupka and Erin Coates whose own experiences reveal some of the diverse challenges and interpretations of the role and responsibilities of a “curator” in the current WA scene. Co-chaired by Ron Bradfield Jnr and Dr Janice Lally and presented in partnership with the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery.

Connect Kings Square: Public Art Launch

Kings Square reconnects Perth CBD with Northbridge for the first time in 100 years with over $1.8m of percent for public art. At this all-ages public event on Telethon Avenue, it was an afternoon of celebration as we revealed the artworks with: Artist walks, talks and guided tours; Creative family-friendly activities such as mural painting with Mel McVee; Lantern-making and treasure maps with Awesome Arts; and a special evening performance by Aboriginal performer Phillip Walley-Stack.

Artsource is delighted to work with event sponsors DEXUS and Shell, with support from MRA, City of Perth and Leighton Properties to bring the Kings Square precinct to life.

Tom Malone Art Prize: 6x6 Artist Talks

The highly respected Tom Malone Prize, at the Art Gallery of WA, is an eagerly anticipated event for contemporary Australian glass artists. Our Artsource 6x6 Artist Talk featured speakers from both current and previous exhibitions, as well as judges of the prize:

Bankwest Art Prize: 6x6 Artist Talks

Artsource in association with the Bankwest Art Prize presented a series of six artist talks from finalists in the 2015 Bankwest Art Prize. Finalists Rachel Coad, Tom Freeman, Teelah George, Alex Spremberg, Ben Pushman and Jurek Wybraniec took us on a tour of the new works they have created for the prize and spoke about their experience, techniques and inspirations. Armadale Artist Talk

In association with the City of Armadale, this series of artist talks by Alister Yiap, Leanne Bray, Paul Caporn and Kathy Allam, reflected on how public art projects create vibrant public spaces that enliven our cities and communities.

Public art plays an important role in our everyday lives: it physically enhances buildings and public places by providing beauty, character or colour. Public art reflects and promotes local identity; developing cultural richness in a local community by celebrating culture and encouraging creativity and innovation.

The City of Armadale has engaged Artsource to assist in developing a Public Art Strategy to guide the implementation and ongoing management of public art throughout the City.

#6x6talk: Unpacking TILT

Artsource in association with Heathcote Museum and Art Gallery presented a series of 6 minute artist talks, Unpacking TILT, from professional practicing artists who have completed the TILT residency program at Heathcote Museum and Art Gallery. Eva Fernandez, Holly Story (in collaboration with poet Jennifer Kornberger), Andy Quilty, Merrick Belyea, Tom Muller and Paul Caporn spoke about their practice, what TILT offered them, the work they made and how the residency influenced their practice.

An exclusive tour of the new Heathcote Cultural Precinct facilities was led by curator, Jana Braddock.

Artist Talk + Pop-Up Exhibition: Meeting Place of the Heart

In association with the City of Mandurah, Artsource presented this series of artist talks to reflect on place making and what it means for Mandjoogoordap, the 'meeting place of the heart'. Artists Liam Dee; Peter Farmer; Stuart Green; Phillip Gamblen and Simon Gilby spoke about working in public art and community engagement.

A pop-up exhibition in the Mandurah Library showed maquettes are small-scale models of larger artworks that help an artist demonstrate their ideas and solidify a concept when it comes to making artwork – especially those in 3D.

Artist Talk: Creative Research Into New Genres of Experimentation

Artsource in association with SymbioticA’s HR initiative and Creative Research Into New Genres of Experimentation presents a series of artist talks exploring how artists pose an artistic hypothesis, and examine the procedures, tests and results of experimental artistic practice.

We heard from artists Fiona Gavino and James Berlyn and artist teams Snapcat and VJzoo about working in an experimental field: proposing and testing a new idea, what has worked, what can fail and what the eventual results can be.

#6x6talk: Winner

In association with Turner Galleries, Artsource presented Winner, a series of 6-minute artist talks from professional practicing artists who have won prizes in the past year; about their practice, their involvement in prizes and how this has changed their practice. Paul Kaptein: winner of the prestigious $25,000 acquisitive Mandorla Art Award (2014) and the Mid West Art Prize - City of Greater Geraldton Overall Award for Excellence (2015). Peter Dailey: In 2010 he was the 2nd recipient of "The Syndicate" project, a three-year project to produce 10 life size figurative works (see right). Iain Dean: The 2014 winner of the Black Swan National Portrait Prize, Perth WA was also a finalist in the 2013 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize for his work Tell me lies and lullabies, but don’t tell me to change. Laurel Nannup: In 2006, seven of Nannup’s prints were acquired by the National Gallery of Australia, six by the Art Gallery of Western Australia and two by the Berndt Museum of Anthropology in Perth. Nigel Hewitt: is represented in collections including Art Gallery of Western Australia, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Artbank, SGIO, BankWest, Wesfarmers, Holmes a Court, The Stein Collection and is this year's Glover Prize winner. Caspar Fairhall: in 2012 won the Cossack Art Award including a 2013 residency in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

#6x6talk: What have you been up to?

Artsource in association with John Curtin Gallery presented a series of 6-minute artist talks from six professional practicing artists working outside of Western Australia, including: Tim Burns, Thea Costantino, Pilar Mata Dupont, Abdul-Rahman Abdullah, Joanna Lamb and Shannon Lyons, who talked about their practice, their involvement in national and international events, and how these opportunities came about.

Ignite Initiative recipients, Eva Fernandez, Olga Cironis, Christopher Young, Stuart Elliott and Katie West were interviewed and discussed the outcomes of the Ignite program; including the mentorship and professional development opportunities they undertook. Artist Talk: Katrin Herzner with interview by Dr Perdita Phillips

Artsource’s 2015 Basel Exchange Artist in Residence, Katrin Herzner, tracked her GPS coordinates to make a series of line drawings illustrating her travels and experiences during her residency at the Artsource Fremantle residential studio. By digitally recording a series of physical movements across landscapes, the continuous line drawings generated a visual diary of her exploits.

“For me, migration appears in lines, like the map of the public transport system. Every day we’re walking past people and our lines are crossing. They are like ephemeral graffiti and I offer a special media to make them visible to everyone. I can explain these lines as being like a diary of my everyday life, same as my travels. It’s not necessary to know the story behind them, but it is fun to tell the background to others and uncover the truth,” says Herzner.

In the final two months of her Artsource residency, her studio exhibition, ‘Hello, I am leaving’, included installations, sculpture, recorded Australian movements and ‘Zeitfenster’ (Time Windows) a photography slideshow of concentrated light and time.

#6x6talk: Albany Talks

Albany Talks is a series of 6 minute artist talks from professional practicing artists discussing their approach to creative practice in a regional area presented in association with the Vancouver Arts Centre. In the changing climate of art and support systems, the artist is required to become a jack of all trades, diversifying and maximising opportunities and resources to maintain a sustainable practice. Sue Codee, Kati Thamo, Michael O’Doherty, Indra Geidans, Annette Davis and Tania Spencer negotiate artistic practice with commercial creativity engaging in diverse business ventures, collaborations, gallery networks, major group exhibitions, education, awards and public art projects. Albany Talks is an opportunity to talk about what else artists so and how it can enrich their practice.

Artist Talk: Pascal & Gil

French artist, Pascal Dombis, has been using computers and algorithms for the past twenty years to produce excessive repetition of simple processes. Unpredictable and dynamic visual forms are synthesised into digital wall drawings, lenticular pieces or video installations. Working alongside French architect, Gil Percal, the duo talk about their combined public art practice and collaborations that confront the human viewer with ‘his/her’ own primitive irrationality.

#6x6talk: What's Next?

Recent art school graduates David Brophy, Anna Dunnill, Marian Giles, Pascal Proteau, Jessica Tan and Katie West, have gone on to do some exciting things since their graduation. This 6x6 Artist Talk looked at their practice, what they were currently working on and what was coming up.

The event was held at Perth ARI Paper Mountain and was a great way to end the year. Artsource would like to thank all those that attended and Gage Roads Brewing Co. for sponsoring this event.

#6x6talk: Here Comes the Future

Artsource and the Margaret River Gallery co-presented this event to coincide with the exhibition Here Comes The Future. Six of the exhibiting artists; Kieron Broadhurst, Anna McEachran, Jordy Hewitt, Hyunji Kim, Hayley Welsh and Elizabeth Marruffo, will be interviewed by curator and Artsource team member Anna Richardson about the role of drawing in the contemporary art world, and their views on the illustration versus fine art debate.

The Artist Talks were truly interesting and inspiring; it was a pleasure to hear from our younger members as well as catch up with our members in the region. Artsource would like to thank the Margaret River Gallery for having us and Gage Roads Brewing Co. for sponsoring the event.
