Artist Statement

Mel McVee is a mural artist and sculpturer using colour, shape and detail to invoke a sense of nostalgia - celebrating what is locally beautiful and quintessentially Australian.

Biography

I’m a Perth born mural and sculpture artist creating works of whimsy and colour.

My work primarily deals with the idea of lines and connection.  With a cartographic background of creating maps for the environmental industry, I have been fascinated in the way the surrounding world can be shaped in absolutes. Solid colours and shapes are used to creatively define an area, an idea or a relationship.

With aesthetic influences from artists such as painter Howard Arkley and print maker Kit Hiller, I use colour to invoke a sense of nostalgia within the surrounding environment - celebrating what is locally beautiful and quintessentially Australian.

I have created over 25 murals to date, and work extensively with local communities in bringing art onto the street.
